This site assists in the "rediscovery" of "tobacco use as a mental disorder" (see citation below).
This is not initial discovery, this is rediscovery: data that used to be widely known, but became subjected to the tobacco taboo (meaning, censorship, suppression, treating this data as 'unmentionable.'
The tobacco taboo is still not overcome. You can observe that most all writers on the subject perversely insist on calling tobacco use (meaning, addiction, mental disorders, and brain damage), a mere 'habit.' (In law, the
universal malice intent of such writers is foreseeable harm, as shown by the typical natural and probable consequences of the censorship and suppression of this data, obstructing public awareness, limiting meaningful awareness to the research community.)
Tobacco Smoke is properly identified as Toxic Tobacco Smoke (TTS). It is produced by Tobacco Smoking Conduct (TSC). The TTS chemical combination is not environment-, but conduct-generated.
TTS has high quantities of
carbon monoxide (42,000 particles). Carbon monoxide is unsafe in quantities above 100 particles. See our site on cigarettes' toxic chemicals.
The brain requires an unobstructed blood flow and operates on electrical impulses and chemicals, e.g., serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, etc. They are involved in regulating mood, reasoning, ethical controls, and all brain functions. The brain's message transfer process involves individual brain cells, neurons, passing messages from one neuron to the next. Neurons communicate with each other by using such chemicals to transfer messages, cross the synapses, between neurons.
Tobacco's massive quantities of toxic chemicals have an impairing effect on this message transfer process. Tobacco alters, impairs, damages, brain function and structure.
Naturally the foreseeable result is that brain functions (e.g., mood, reasoning, ethical controls, the self-defense function, arithmetic abilities, verbal skills, thought and sentence formulation, etc.) are impaired, paralyzed, damaged, altered, destroyed. Tobacco is, in short, what may be deemed a "mind-altering drug," a "narcotic."

TTS-caused damage, says Thomas Edison (26 April 1914) is irreversible.
It is said that tobacco relieves stress, relaxes. Here is why: The massive quantities (42,000 ppm) of carbon monoxide that tobacco smoke contains, result in an impaired oxygen supply to the brain. This is "cerebral anoxia." It occurs cell by cell, neuron by neuron, year after year. When to any cell, neuron,
"the oxygen supply is cut off, then damage to neurones occurs after a few minutes. Some neurones die."—Anthony Hopkins, Epilepsy: The Facts (Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 1981).
Dead brain cells, dead neurons, are quiet, calm, "content," "soothed," "relaxed," "
pleasured" cells, i.e., an "euphoric effect "! Thus tobacco-users face enormous dangers without
seemingly caring! The brain damage (e.g., dyscalculia and anosognosia) they develop, means that they cannot compute the odds against them, odds that nonsmokers around them easily grasp!
Cigarette smoke's toxic chemicals including carbon monoxide cause brain damage that alters motor control function and short term memory. In essence, smokers short circuit their own learning process. This presents to the smoker as if it were a 'calming' effect, as adult learning produces anxiety to the emotional platform. Smoker behaviors are seemingly impossible to change as there can be little or no learning process while undergoing continual brain damage.
Additionally, cigarette smoke is quite radioactive, says E. A. Martell, "Tobacco Radioactivity and Cancer in Smokers," 63 American Scientist 404-412 (July-August 1975). Radioactivity renders artery walls "highly permeable to the passage of red cells [bleeding]."

This combination of brain damage effects foreseeably, as a "natural and probable consequence," leads to addiction and DSM-III conditions, and organic conditions such as 'small strokes,' affecting millions annually, silently, and having cumulative effects. It is addiction, aka tobacco-caused brain damage, that keeps so many smokers smoking, due to impairing the self-defense reflex, and causing related brain injuries.
Thus, conditions such as “mental disease . . . fall into [the] predictability category," say Drs. C. J. Zook and Dr. F. D. Moore in "High-cost users of medical care," 302 New Engl. J. of Med. (# 18) 996-1002 at p 1001 (1 May 1980).

At 126, “Thus, thoughts may be connected simply because they occur together in time. It is as if thinking gets waylaid, leading forever down divergent paths and either failing to get to the point quickly or going beyond it. A schizophrenic patient describes the state this way:
| 'My thoughts get all jumbled up. I start thinking or talking about something but I never get there. Instead, I wander off in the wrong direction and get caught up with all sorts of different things that may be connected with the thing I want to say but in a way I can't explain. . . .
‘My trouble is that I've got too many thoughts. You might think about something, let's say that ashtray and just think, oh! yes, that's for putting my cigarette in, but I would think of a dozen different things connected with it at the same time.’”

|This 1925 article summarizes already extant data that tobacco smoke is a brain poison causing "éclatement." Here is the background.
At 135, "Ces faits sont suffisamment nombreux, suffisament précis pour affirmer une action nocive du tobac sur le cerveau." The facts are sufficiently manifold and exact to be able to affirm a harmful action of tobacco upon the brain.
Binet notes the problem that nicotine, once inside the person, is not eliminated except very slowly, "La nicotine que passe ainsi dans l'organisme ne s'élimine qu'avec une grande lenteur."
The smoke is also comprised of other chemicals, by-products of combustion, and especially, carbon monoxide, "De plus, la fumée de tabac ne contient pas seulment de la nicotine; on y trouve encore de la nicotianine, des bases pyridiques et des produits de combustion, et, en particular, de l'oxyde de carbone."
Prolonged tobacco use results in lesions in the cerebral cortex. "On note des lésions celluaires dans l'écorce cérébrale, après intoxication par la fumée de tabac. . . . le maximum de lésions . . . du système nerveux." Cells are lesser in number, and show deterioration. "Les lésions cellulaires se constatent sur les différentes circonvolutions et dans les différentes couches de l'écorce . . . les corps granuleux sont diminués de nombre, poussiéreux, décolorés . . . . un véritable éclatement de certaines cellules." An "éclatement" is translated "bursting, breaking up, explosion." (Definition by Ernest A. Baker, M.A., D.Lit., ed., Cassell's French-English Dictionary [London: Cassell & Co, Ltd, 1920], p 227). An example useage of the word "éclatement" refers to a tire "blowout."
For example, "La nicotine est capable de déterminer de la congestion cérébrale." Nicotine causes cerebral congestion. Binet cited E. Wertheimer, in Archives de Physiologie normale et pathologique, 1894, p 302, as noting that "L'augmentation de volume du cerveau . . . Brain damage such as abnormally increased brain size involves a combination of factors, increased blood pressure, altered heart rate, etc., repeated fluctuations as smokers take doses of poison, then it wears off, they take more, etc. Binet states that "l'influence vaso-notrice vient se joindre une accélération considérable du coeur."
At 134, "La nicotine produit une augmentation considérable du volume du cerveau." Nicotine produces a considerable increase in brain volume (swelling). This is not a favorable effect. Compare with data from George W. Jacoby, 50 N Y Med J 172-174 (17 Aug 1889), infra, at 172, discussing carbon monoxide, a "gas . . . acting as a direct poison upon the brain and medulla oblongata. The walls of the vessels also lose their tonus, become dilated, and rupture easily. Autopsies have revealed large foci of softening in the brain, hæmorrhages into the meninges, and capillary apoplexies in the brain substance." "A few inhalations of the pure gas produce convulsions." Such data is consistent with swelling, "une augmentation considérable du volume du cerveau."

A brain "éclatement," expressing the concept of "bursting," or "explosion," like a tire "blowout," is clearly something to avoid. We can get new tires, but we cannot get a new brain!

When smokers throw used e-cigarettes onto the streets, they, like burning butts, cause problems beyond littering: lighted butts cause fires, and used e-cigarettes cause flats. Tony Dewildt, manager of Bay City's Belle Tire: “We have seen usually 1 or 2 a week puncturing the tire. . . . They’re all made out of metal, so when they slash a tire, they usually leave a pretty big gash in it,” typically leaving the tire unrepairable," says "E-cigarette cartridges puncturing tires" (WGAL News, Bay City, Michigan, 26 November 2013).

"It results from dysfunction of the language centers in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia or of the white matter pathways that connect them," says "Aphasia: Function and Dysfunction of the Cerebral Lobes."
This is due to the fact that "tobacco . . . so excites [damage] the brain as to make it impossible to concentrate the mind on one subject . . . followed by failing memory, incontinuity of thought," says Dr. G. F. Butler, cited in the book by Bruce Fink, Professor of Botany, Miami University, Tobacco (Cincinnati: The Abingdon Press, 1915), p 25.
One way this typical smoker brain damage symptom is displayed is — they change the subject. Note this behavior of smokers. This symptom becomes evident when a subject they don't want to deal with is raised.
As Thomas Edison well said, smoker brain damage is irreversible.
Note standard psychiatric data, the “special [warped] laws of logic that the schizophrenic uses in support of his complexes or ideas, which to us seem delusional. . . . keep in mind that” what “seems absurd to us is expressed . . . by the patient . . . To him, his idea is rational, unquestionable, based on an absolute conviction of its truth. His unconscious motivation, a desire that cannot be controlled . . . obliges the patient to use unusual ways of thinking,” p. 65, Understanding and Helping the Schizophrenic (New York: Basic Books, 1979), by Dr. Silvano Arieti. At 46, “The patient does not attempt to demonstrate the validity of his ideas. He 'knows'; that is enough. His knowledge comes from an inner, unchallenged certitude that does not require demonstration. 'He knows.'”

Brain damage is known to impair / destroy ability to choose ("abulia"). For example, note “Korsakoff’s psychosis." It "was first described by the Russian psychiatrist [Dr. Sergei] Korsakoff [M.D., 1854-1900] in 1887. The outstanding symptom is a memory defect (particularly with regard to recent events) which is concealed by falsification. An individual may be unable to recognize pictures, faces, rooms, and other objects as identical with those just seen, although they may appear to him as similar. Such persons increasingly tend to fill in gaps with reminiscences and fanciful tales that lead to unconnected and distorted associations. There individuals may appear to be delirious, hallucinated, and disoriented for time and place, but ordinarily their confusion and disordered conduct are closely related to their attempts to fill in memory gaps. The memory disturbance itself seems related to an inability to form new associations. . . . some personality deterioration usually remains in the form or memory impairment, blunting of intellectual capacity, and lowering of moral and ethical standards." 1. de las Casas, Bartolomé (1484-1566) of Spain wrote about tobacco's adverse effect on the brain known as "addiction," among Indians, and their reporting their inability to stop smoking! (1527, early tobacco addiction reference). What addiction results from is brain damage that acts "to produce . . . the most deplorable effect of insanity, which is the dethronement of reason from its governing power," which does "take away the power of resistance," apt words from People v Carmichael, 5 Mich 10, 20; 71 Am Dec 769, 775 (1858).
"Tobacco, with its mind-dulling narcotic capacities, was ideally suited to such representations of the peasant, in which his/her character ranges from naive, earthy simpleton to diligent worker to aggressive brute. Not unlike the breakfast beer soup that predated coffee as a morning drink, tobacco was, in a sense, a way of keeping the lower classes in their place –a class in a perpetual state of drunkenness poses little threat. Along the same lines, the peasant represented a means to criticize tobacco use as a dirty and unsophisticated custom, but at the same time to justify further commerce in tobacco and its related products," says "The Culture of Smoke: Low-Life" (New York Public Library, 1997-1998, citing 17th century attitutde, already well-aware of tobacco's brain damaging and debilitating qualities.
"'Every regular cigarette smoker is injured . . . Cigarette smoking kills some, makes others lung cripples, gives still others far more than their share of illness and loss of work days. As Binet in 1925 alluded to above, cigarette smoke contains vast quantities of brain damage-causing toxic chemicals, including carbon monoxide known to damage the brain. Disinhibitory symptoms include abulia or anomie (impaired willpower, impaired impulse and ethical controls, moral apathy). This paralysis of normal controls is called impulsiveness, 'losing self-control,' or a deadened conscience, or personal responsibility inability, or psychopathology (as per smoker deviance/licentiousness).
Sane people understand behavioral concepts described by words such as "should," "should not," "ought," and "ought not." Ex.: People "should not" do X behavior. But the brain damaged individual cannot comprehend. Instead, they can only comprehend the "do" concept, what people actually do. People "do" X behavior. The notion that doing said X behavior "should not," "ought not," be done, is incomprehensible to the brain-damaged. Test this fact yourself. To such a person, say the words, ". . . [behavior] should not happen." Notice how the brain damaged person becomes unresponsive, or otherwise unreceptive.
"Under the influence of tobacco, the judgment, the will, the conscience, the imagination even mental and moral faculty, are changed—all are nicotinized. . . . In other words, 'The pipe, cigar or cigarette dream' is a sort of temporary drug insanity."—Dr. John H. Kellogg, cited in Dr. Jesse M. Gehman, Smoke Over America (East Aurora, N.Y: The Roycrofters, 1943), p 216. In reality tobacco-induced "insanity" becomes permanent.

Tobacco symptoms mimic, parallel, foreshadow, those of schizophrenia. “One of the defining characteristics of schizophrenia is disordered thinking. This is present, in one form or another, at one time or another, in all schizophrenics and is typically what makes schizophrenia often seem so bizarre," say Kayla Bernheim, Ph.D., and Richard Lewine, Ph.D., Schizophrenia: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments (New York: Norton, 1979), p 23. At page 26, quoting Bleuler, they say, “'In schizophrenia . . . thinking becomes confused, bizarre, incorrect, abrupt.'” Note the schizophrenia connection cited by John H. Kellogg, M.D., Tobaccoism, or, How Tobacco Kills (1922), p 78. Schizophrenia symptoms such as "confused, bizarre, incorrect, abrupt" thinking are foreshadowed in smokers' "abulia" including "impaired impulse controls."

For an example of this smoker brain-damage induced lack of empathy, note this example of smoker Ronald Jayne, Jr.'s reaction after causing a crash while rushing out to buy cigarettes, by his ignoring a stop sign, hitting oncoming traffic, killing five people and injuring others: “after Jayne caused the incident he got out, sat on the side of the road and said 'this is going to mean a world of hurt for me.' He lit up a cigarette and waited for the police.”
“Yes [says commentary], poor Jayne is in a world of hurt. Sounds like he didn’t even care that he killed 5 people and injured 3 more. 4 of the dead were children” (Details;
"Clinically the clouded states suggests a delirium [Dr. Falret's 1839 concept] with liberation of aggressive and occasionally, self-destructive impulses. Acts of violence may be committed in these automatisms and may be of a strikingly brutal nature, the patient pursuing his crime to a most revolting extreme."—Lawrence C. Their “criminal actions resulting from mental disease are often purposeful, intentional, and ingeniously planned,” says the reviewer of Herbert Fingarette and Anne Fingarette Hasse's book, Mental Disabilities and Criminal Responsibility (Berkeley: Univ of Calif Press, 1979), summarizing pp 52-53, in the review in 79 Mich Law Rev (#4) 754-756 at 754 (March 1981) (Context).
Note that in such mental disorder, “explanations for . . . behavior are fragmentary,” says Dr. Lyle Tussing, in Psychology for Better Living (New York: John Wiley, 1965, 5th ed.), p. 357. (Note context.) Dr. Tussing at 356 says that “the most common symptom of this disorder is the emotional apathy and indifference in the patient with respect to other individuals.” “Hallucinations, particularly of hearing and vision, are fairly common during the early stages . . . disorganized experience . . . clarity of thought is lost in the confusion. His explanations for his behavior are fragmentary and have a dreamlike quality. Another aspect of schizophrenic behavior that is frequently mentioned is its apparent inappropriateness.” “The second noticeable characteristic of the behavior of schizophrenics is a certain lack of harmony, integration, and coordination between their emotional and rational or intellectual activities.” “The third symptom that seems to characterize all schizophrenic patients is a gradual mental deterioration.”
Brain damage is discussed by Dr. James C. Coleman, in Abnormal Psychology and Modern Life, 5th edition (Scott, Foresman & Co, 1976), pp. 460-461, “where the damage is severe . . . symptoms typically include . . . a tendency to confabulate . . . to fill in gaps . . . Impairment of learning, comprehension, and judgment—with ideation tending to be concrete and impoverished—and with inability to think on higher conceptual levels and to plan.” Note parallel with hallucination and paranoia.
The "tendency to confabulate" means they “cannot differentiate between . . . fantasy” and truth, People v. Gonzales, 108 Mich App 145, 310 N.W.2d 306 at 310 (1981), aff'd 415 Mich 615; 329 NW2d 743 (1982).
Tobacco use is disinhibitory, i.e., it causes moral apathy, dulls the conscience, the moral sense, says Count Leo Tolstoy, Lasterhafte Genüsse aka Vicious Pleasures (London: Mathieson, 1896), pp 36-91 ("Alcohol and tobacco") ("The brain becomes numbed by the nicotine." Wherefore, due to tobacco-induced abulia, moral apathy, personal responsibility inability, ethical paralysis, as published repeatedly-to-present, since the 1830's, about 90% of alcoholism and about 90% of crime is by smokers. Smokers do most of the crime, the rapes, the robberies, the drugs, the murders.

The destruction of brain control centers, just as destruction of parts of a computer or car or other device, produces aberrant results.
An example of smoker's moral apathy and impaired impulse control is this: to have the "sadistic life quite unimpeded," "liked blood," and the "powerless" aspects of the victim, said Dr. Abraham A. Brill, 3 International Journal of Psychoanalysis (#4) 430-444 at 437-8 (Dec 1922).
Notice that the abulic effect, the moral-apathy-paralysis effect, of tobacco smoking was noted as long ago as 1845: "Tobacco prepares its victims for acts of barbarity . . . . We do not insinuate that all who use tobacco are cruel . . . . But tobacco frets and irritates the nerves, and after the system begins seriously to suffer from its use, it excites the passions, and things are seen with a false shape and coloring:

Here is a more current example with which we are more familiar. Adolf Eichmann was a Nazi mass killer. He displayed these typical moral-apathy smoker symptoms. They were observed and explicitly reduced to writing by one of his captors: symptoms recorded as follows,
"maddening, almost unbelievable, moral obtuseness";
"oblivious to every impulse—compassion, remorse, respect for the sanctity of life";
"he truly did not understand that he had done wrong," say Peter Z. Malkin and Harry Stein, Eichmann In My Hands: A Compelling First-Person Account By The Israeli Agent Who Captured Hitler's Chief Executioner (New York: Warner Books, 1990), pp. 3, xiv, and 5, respectively.
"In many cases, brain damage results in fairly specific" impairments. "Among the more common of these are . . . Acalculia—Loss of ability to do simple arithmetic," says Dr. James C. Ability to do arithmetic typically requires IQ to function above 75.
Smoker dyscalculia, a common brain-damage condition, has long been observed and reported:

Twiggs, for many years principal of the largest grammar school in Detroit, and later supervisor of the Department of School Attendance . . . says: 'As to mental calculations required in the courses of arithmetic, he [the smoker] is practically helpless. He seems to have no control . . . Mental paralysis seems best [as the term] to describe his condition."—Daniel H. As "smoking [makes smokers] short-winded [it thus] lessened their mental efficiency—[so] they could not add figures as accurately or concentrate upon anything as successfully while smoking."—Frank Leighton Wood, M.D., What You Should Know About Tobacco, (Wichita, KS: The Wichita Publishing Co, 1944), p 69.
This condition occurs as "the terminal blood vessels of the brain—those which supply oxygen and nourishment to its highly specialized cortex or outer layer, the part by which we live and work and have our being, and which lifts us up above the beasts of the field—have been contracted by nicotine."—Wood, supra, p 72.
Acalculia / Dyscalculia is rampant among smokers. Note that a signficant tobacco-toxic chemicals-caused brain damage symptom is acalculia, impaired ability to do even simple arithmetic in practical life-saving terms. For example, tell a nonsmoker that a poison is of 42,000 parts whereas the material is unsafe above about 100 parts in a million, the nonsmoker will not ingest it!! Tell a smoker the same, the brain's mechanism for comprehension and reaction is typically destroyed. The smoker continues ingesting the deadly chemicals and poisons!! For an example of smoker brain damage, see, e.g., Marilyn Vos Savant, Smoker Inquiry (Parade Magazine, Sunday, 8 June 2014). Note that the inquirer thought all tobacco deaths occur in one year! hence are a nominal amount! Such significant errors is symptomatic of both dyscalculia and disorientation for time!

In mental disorder, “explanations for . . . behavior are fragmentary,” says Dr. Lyle Tussing, in Psychology for Better Living (New York: John Wiley, 1965, 5th ed.), p. 357. Smokers, unable to comprehend the arithmetic, then swift their attention off the body of evidence! One observable reaction is to claim to find some alleged flaw in some study of tobacco dangers, and then pretend that such alleged flaw refutes the entirety of the centuries of evidence!!! Such approach, fragmentation, is like saying, there's a flat piece of land on the earth, wherefore the whole earth is flat! This smoker reaction, changing the subject off the body of evidence, onto some fragment, helps show what is meant by Dr. William M'Donald, 1 The Lancet (#1748) 231 (28 Feb 1857), that "no smoker can think steadily or continuously on any subject. . . . He cannot follow out a train of ideas.")
Such shows impoverished, fragmentary, and disconnected ideation.
Impaired Self-Defense Reflex. Concomitant with smokers' acalculia, is impaired self-defense reflex. In the example above (42,000 vs 100), the smoker reaction (to NOT act, to not take defense measure) is typical of a severely impaired self-defense mental capacity. This is a typical tobacco effect. Carbon monoxide is well-known to impair the operation of the self-defense reflex function, i.e., smoking is NOT actual "choice" or "consent." (Also note the fraud issue.) And note that smokers regularly smoke outdoors, even in bitter cold, oft without adequate clothing, further evidence of their impaired Self-Defense Reflex, unable to realize to protect themselves adequately. (Thus pushers can kill smokers in
The 42,000 example relates to carbon monoxide, in cigarettes at that level as our cigarette toxic chemicals site shows. Due to their brain damage, especially the acalculia, smokers are unable to comprehend the mathematics of the tobacco danger, the mathematics of tobacco's toxic ingredients. (Similarly, smokers are prone to gambling, unable to react to the odds against them in that area of life as well. As the Palmer case reveals, gambling establishments know of this medical fact, and take advantage.
And pushers likewise take advantage of children, essentially, child molestation.)
Note examples of how the impaired self-defense reflex works, e.g., smoking in an oxygen tent, as noted in these references: Evans v. Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, Inc., 35 App Div 2d 1071; 316 NYS2d 447 (NY, 1970), and Granger v Deaconess Hospital of Grand Forks, 138 NW2d 443 (ND, 1965). And of course, the major example is smokers' continued smoking even after the Surgeon General warnings.
Smokers' situation due to their impaired Self-Defense Reflex is compounded due to their typical anosognosia, lack of comprehension of their impairments. Smokers are impaired, but typically are unable to comprehend the fact of their impairment. This can be evidenced by denial, e.g., saying, 'I am not diseased.' Thus they don't ask for help in this matter. Anosognosia is a typical result of tobacco-induced brain damage. “To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant.”—Amos Bronson Alcott.
Anosognosia is linked to the brain damage condition acalculia, to abulia, and to the damaged self-defense mechanism. Smokers typically have all three brain damage conditions.
"The most marked deviation from normal human behavior is shown by those individuals who are psychotic (insane in the legal sense of the term). These persons are suffering from a real derangement of their mental lives, so severe that they do not respond to and are not motivated by normal stimuli [such as a poison warning]. Generally, they have [anosognosia, meaning] very little insight into their own conditions," says Dr. Lyle Tussing, Psychology for Better Living (New York: Wiley Pub, 1959), p 345. At p. 357, Dr. Tussing says, “Simple cases are marked by their apparent and long-lasting deterioration and scarcity of acute psychotic symptoms. Their indifference, their lack of judgment and foresight make them seem feeble-minded rather than psychotic. Generally, they are rather inadequate persons who seem run-down, and rarely, if ever regain interest in normal life.”
In Psychology for Better Living (New York: John Wiley, 5th ed., 1965), Dr. Lyle Tussing at 361-2 indicates, “The vast majority of mental-hospital patients . . . are more like cattle, sitting around until someone tells them what to do next." Sadly, this symptom is common among smokers, who go around smoking for years, not stopping until forced by some life-threatening medical condition, and sometimes unable even then to stop smoking.
“The patient does not attempt to demonstrate the validity of his ideas. He 'knows'; that is enough. His knowledge comes from an inner, unchallenged certitude that does not require demonstration. 'He knows.'” See Dr. Silvano Arieti, in Understanding and Helping the Schizophrenic (New York: Basic Books, 1979), at 46. And, “when a statement or a belief that seems absurd to us [sane people] is expressed with great sincerity and even defended by the patient . . . To him, his idea is rational, unquestionable, based on an absolute conviction of its truth. His unconscious motivation, a desire that cannot be controlled or from which he cannot escape, obliges the patient to use unusual ways of thinking,” p 65. “Although the patient has undergone a change that has made him become ill, he does not realize that a transformation has taken place within him,” p. 48. Accordingly, anti-tobacco warnings on tobacco packages are useless. Tobacco users' brain damage precludes their ability to comprehend, much less, to respond to such stimuli. "By 1981, the FTC [Federal Trade Commission] would conclude that the warning labels . . . on packages and advertisements had been ineffective. Even when they were read, the warnings left important gaps in knowledge about the risks of smoking. . . . fewer than 3 per-cent of adults 'even read the warnings.' . . . The FTC was forced to concede that the warnings . . . had significant limitations . . . Consumer Reports . . . saw . . . pessimism about the . . . power of sober sentences [and] 'education'," says Harvard University Prof. Allan M. Brandt, Ph.D., The Cigarette Century (New York: Perseus Books, 2007), § II, "Science," Chapter 8, "Congress: The Best Filter Yet, p 267.
Awareness along these lines already existed in 1915. "We cannot hope to influence many men to abandon a habit firmly fixed [so will be only] an occasional man . . . induced to quit using tobacco," says Prof. Bruce Fink, Tobacco (Cincinnati: The Abingdon Press, 1915), Chapter 10, p 88.
When people due to brain damage aka mental disorder are unable to control their thoughts, are unable “to appreciate the wrongfulness of his [their] conduct,” and “to conform his [their] conduct to the requirements of the law,” they are deemed insane within the meaning of law. Here is a lay example of smokers' deranged belief system: "Used to be California, but now you can't smoke cigarettes anywhere which
I think is totally fair. Smokers, on the other hand, act like the rules we
have set up are not completely logical. 'Oh, I can¹t believe you have to
step outside to blow poisonous fumes in the air. Sounds like an indoor activity to me.' Smokers are the only drug addicts that complain about how inconvenient their own drug use is. I mean, cokeheads don¹t walk around
like, 'Why are all the mirrors on the wall?'" (Andrew Norelli, Late Show

“Paranoid reactions are characterized by persistent systematized delusions. Delusions [see smoker example] differ from hallucinations in that they are false beliefs rather than false sense perceptions. The paranoid person may react entirely normally except when his delusions are touched upon . . . . Delusions often take the form of either delusions of grandeur (the patient believes he is Napoleon) or delusions of persecution (the patient has suffered at the hands of his enemies). Paranoid symptoms are common in some types of schizophrenia . . . The delusions of grandeur are elaborate rationalizations, and the delusions of persecution are clearly projections.” See Ernest R. “ Some degree of bleeding, or intracerebral hemorrhage, occurs in most cases of head injury.” (p 475).
“When the hemorrhaging [as with tobacco's carbon monoxide, nicotine, and radioactivity] involves small spots of bleeding—often microscopic sleeves of red cells encircling tiny blood vessels—the condition is referred to as petechial hemorrhages. There is some evidence of petechial hemorrhages in most brain injuries, but in fatal cases they are usually multiple or generalized throughout the brain.” (p 476).
This type brain injury was being noticed in smokers at autopsy by the year 1857.
Tobacco “addicts are usually unaware of their disturbance of judgment,” says Dr. Lennox Johnston, 243 The Lancet (#6225) 742 (19 Dec 1942). (See Excerpt.) Note said unawareness in anosognosia context.

How to prevent tobacco induced brain damage is easy. Iowa and Tennessee showed the way in 1897, banning cigarettes from being manufactured or sold.
"Non-smoking should be regarded as the normal social behaviour, and . . . all action which can promote the development of this attitude be taken," say M. Ashley, W. Forbes, and R. Frecker, 125 Canadian Med Ass'n Journal (#1) p 1077 (15 Nov 1981). The goal is that "smoking is no longer the norm," says 2 The Lancet (#8361) p 1234 (26 Nov 1983).
Drug use such as smoking has residual, permanent irreversible mind-altering (euphemism for brain damaging) effects. Edison reported that long ago, in 1914. So do Drs. Fagon (1699); Clarke (1907); and Conrin (1980).

P. 1 references "a behavioral, cognitive impairment in the initiation and flexibility of thinking and reasoning, a loss in memory function, or both. . . . These longer lasting, persistent impairments in behavior extending beyond any detoxification period have been termed 'residual effects.'"
P. 3 references "a pattern of behavioral impairments suggestive of central nervous system (CNS) damage . . . a pattern of generalized cognitive impairments in the areas of concept formation, perceptual-motor performance, and complex learning. . . . a diffuse pattern of cortical impairment . . . frontal-limbic circuits . . . residual memory deficit . . . diencephalic subcortical pathology . . . hasten a form of organic brain disorder such as dementia."
P. 73 cites examples, e.g., "paranoia with auditory or visual hallucinations [as among the] well-known adverse effects." (See similar 1876 data, 1899 data, and 1890-1891 data; and tobacco hallucinogen data.) Compare to confabulation.
In addition to hallucination symptoms, smokers also disproportionately display delusional symptoms.

|Brain functioning can become so impaired as to reduce memory to essentially zero. Here is an example of a tragic situation, memory reduced to "about two minutes."
This person suffered "an inflamation of the brain, which . . . attacked his right and left temporal lobes and a good protion of the left frontal lobe. Within the temporal lobe, on both sides, is the hippocampus, a structure absolutely critical for memory. [His] hippocampus on both sides has been destroyed. . . . "
"[His] 'world now consists of a moment, with no past to anchor it and no future to look forward to. It's a blinkered moment. He sees what is right in front of him, but as soon as that information hits the brain it fades. Nothing makes an impression, nothing registers. . . . As soon as he perceives [something] and looks away, it's gone for him. So it's a moment-to-moment consciousness, as it were, a time vacuum. And everything before that moment is completely void. . . . He can't grasp what's wrong with him because even as you are telling him something, he is forgetting the previous sentence. So he can never take in or understand what is wrong with him. . . .'"

Cigar smoker Elliott Roosevelt (brother of Theodore) was committed in 1891. His behavior had been "a nightmare of horror," including alcoholism, promiscuity, semi-epileptic seizures, and suicidal tendencies. "He is evidently a maniac morally no less than mentally." Michigan's safe cigarettes' law is another example for the nation and the world. It protects both smokers' and nonsmokers' rights by banning deleterious and adulterated cigarettes while allowing safe cigarettes. It avoids criminalizing children, as others do.
Others' proposals, such as H.R. 1130, only require fire-safe cigarettes. Michigan leadership since 1909 requires cigarettes to be ingredients-safe, comprehensively safe, the same consumer product requirement as for all other products. For more information, see TCPG's analysis of the law.
Michigan Governor John Engler and staff were paper supportive of action to enforce it, issuing five pertinent memoranda.

Note stroke symptoms. Lack of awareness can spell disaster. A stroke victim may suffer additional brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Some doctors say any bystander can recognize a stroke by asking four simple questions:
* 1. Ask the individual to smile.
* 2. Ask the individual to raise both arms.
* 3. Ask the individual to speak a simple sentence.
* 4. Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is'crooked' (goes to one side or the other), that can be asign of a stroke.
If the individual has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
Researchers, after discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, urged the public to learn at least the first three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting in February 2004. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.
Best solution: Don't do the behaviors that lead to strokes developing in the first place. Protect your brain. Don't smoke.
And work for enforcement of the already existing constitutional rights and criminal law that help prevent stroke incidents. Glantz, Ph.D. says it "demonstrated that implementation of the Arizona statewide smokefree indoor air law was associated with drops in hospital admissions for not only heart attacks (which has been shown in many places already), but also for angina (chest pain), stroke, asthma. They showed that there were drops in Arizona counties that had no smoking restrictions before the state law went into effect, but not ones that were already smokefree. They also showed no changes in hospital admissions for diseases not cause by secondhand smoke. This is exactly what one would expect to happen if the law was making a big difference. The most important piece of information in the study, however, was a direct estimate of the hospitalization costs avoided. In the first 13 months, the law was associated with savings of $16.8 million. This is all the more impressive when you consider that the major population centers in Arizona were already smokefree. This study provides more evidence that we should shift from thinking about tobacco control as long run prevention to a highly effective, simple and inexpensive form of medical care cost containment."
